COVID and 2020-2021 didn’t help, mentally and physically. Along with changes of ownership and management of Tyabb Packing House Antiques where we were based.
We began with a series of sales in mid-2022, moving through into a "free" sale with everything free to take in December 2022, before finally closing.
Continuing with someone else or selling the business was never really an option. The “opportunity” to work all public holidays and never see your friends or family on the weekends (as those are the busiest times to operate) was not exactly an enticing prospect when presenting a business opportunity.
Antiques, old wares and second hand items have always been (for the most part) an owner-operated business, with niche knowledge that is difficult to teach quickly or easily.

If you’re not buying books, what should I do with them?
If you’re clearing out a house because of downsizing or for a deceased estate, or are simply moving; take out all the books that are sentimental to you. Then let friends and family look through the remaining books. Then you can try op shops, but many are overstocked and may not be taking any additional books. If you have any older books then you can try rare book sellers that are close to you. Then, while it is unfortunate to suggest this you can take it to a waste recycling centre. Most councils will take paper recycling for free.
Aside from condition of the books, where they've been stored will have the largest affect on the price that others may offer. If your books have been in a household with smokers, pets or mothballs this can drastically affect the price you might be offered as these scents are quite difficult to remove from printed materials.
Not really. "Collectable" items for things like the Olympics, almost anything royal related, or an anniversary of publication for newspapers generally aren't worth anything as everyone buys the collectable editions.
